One Step at a Time
I always have told my students that they can do anything if they break the task down into small parts/steps. They always give me a side-eye glance as if they don’t really believe they can write an essay analyzing how Dahl uses syntax to create an emotional reaction in the audience. Yet, when they put the last period in place in the final paragraph of their essay, they drop their pencil, lean back in their seat, and smile in a self-satisfied way. They did it! One step at a time.
Lately, I’ve been feeling a bit overwhelmed. The semester was winding down; I needed to drive down to OKI and spend Christmas break with my mom, who’s been riding out the last couple of Covid waves in NC rather than with me in Tennessee. I desperately want everything in place for the shop so that when May comes to a close, I can step seamlessly into my new chapter without a hiccup. It would do me a great deal of good to remember my own advice: break the task into small steps.
To that end, I’ve put in my license paperwork; I’ve input inventory; I’ve refined the website; and I’ve found a Sprinter. I pick it up next week from Myrtle Beach! It’s a bare-bones cargo van, and it’ll have to stay in OKI when I go back to Tennessee, so no conversion will be taking place until I get back at the end of May. But I’m okay with that. Baby steps. I’ll get where I need to be—one step at a time.
I hope you’ll follow along with me.
