Beginnings

It all begins with an idea.

About five or six years ago, I discovered the local used bookstore was on the market. My mom, who is a retired elementary school principal, and my aunt, a former school librarian, were intrigued with the thought that the three of us could purchase the store, which they would run until I could quit/retire from teaching. In doing our due-diligence, we decided to pass, mainly because I was still too far out from retirement, and they didn’t want to be tied to a store for several years.

That didn’t stop me from dreaming. Each visit to OKI would bring me to the bookstore, which was still for sale, and I’d imagine being its owner all over again. Then Covid hit and with it lockdowns. The little store didn’t survive.

Fast-forward to Fall break 2021. During a late-night internet-surf-fest, it hit me out of the blue. Instead of a brick-n-mortar bookstore, I could have an online store along with a book mobile for interfacing personally with book lovers. In that moment, my little idea started to take shape.

Currently, I’m working on our online presence while trying to find a good, clean, sprinter van to convert to the book mobile that fits my budget. My focus for K’s Beach Reads is just as the name implies—books one reads at the beach or on vacation. The books we read on our down-time should transport us away from the stresses of our everyday lives. For me, I love a great historical fiction novel about Britain or Ireland. My mom loves romance novels; other family members escape through books by David Baldacci or Lee Child.

What are your favorite authors with whom you escape the daily grind?

Let me know in the comments below. :)
